A 16th-century historic monument, the Medersa Ben Youssef is a masterpiece of Moroccan Islamic architecture. Built between 1564 and 1565 under the direction of Sultan Abdullah Al-Ghaleb Assaadi, this former Koranic school was a center of learning for four centuries, encompassing religious sciences, philosophy, medicine and mathematics. The central courtyard, adorned with a pool and surrounded by galleries, and the walls embellished with intricately patterned zellige, underline its majestic architecture. With over 100 student rooms around the patio, the medersa offers harmonious symmetry and fascinating interplay of light. Recently restored, it combines original elements with meticulous renovations. A visit to the medersa offers a serene atmosphere, ideally in the morning or at the end of the day to avoid the crowds. Admission is 50 dirhams (approx. €5), cash only, and a recommended visit lasts 1 to 2 hours.
