Next to Joal, birthplace of Léopold Sédar Senghor, first President of Senegal, you'll discover the charm of a small traditional village, FADIOUTH. Almost 100% Sérères (Senegal's 3rd largest ethnic group), this predominantly Catholic people (90% Catholics and 10% Muslims) still maintain their Christian faith through colorful masses in the village church, in perfect harmony with the Muslim community.
This island will seduce you with the beautiful vegetation of its mangrove swamps lining the inlet, and with the symbolism and unique charm of its mixed cemetery island perched on a heap of shells. Its ancient millet granaries on stilts complete an astonishing discovery.
You'll often have the chance to admire the village women in their shell collecting activities at low tide.
The welcome and calm that reign on the island, which you'll reach via its two wooden pedestrian bridges, will make you want to return or stay longer. Typical shopping available
